To-do list after a fresh installation of Windows

Assuming the installation succeeded without any fatal errors, let's continue with the installation of Service Pack (SP) 2 when at hand. When you haven't got the SP2 cd, goto the next step.

Note: When SP2 is integrated into you're windows installation you can skip this step.

  1. Let windows install any found hardware and reboot
  2. Insert the disc containing ServicePack 2
  3. Goto start->run->browse
  4. Browse to you're cd/dvd drive
  5. Select the file called WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe->ok->ok
  6. SP2 will now be installed, when asked to create a system restore point, deny, this is not necessary, since this is a clean installation of windows, there's nothing to backup
  7. Sit back and relax, this will take anywhere between 15 minutes to two hours, depending on your configuration
  8. When confronted with the Security Center enable both autoupdate and the windows firewall
  9. After finishing the installation the setup wizard asks you to restart the computer, reply positively

Note: Most problems people experience when installing SP2 occur because a lot of software is allready installed. Installing SP2 on a 'clean' system will reduce the chance on fatal errors.
