To-do list after a fresh installation of Windows
Your computer is now protected against most viruses, no scanner detects all of them. Don't think having two scanners decreases the risk of infection since two or more scanners on one system will not work together but against eachother, slowing, sometimes crashing, your computer.
Anyways it's time for protection against hackers, portscanners etc. Once again this section is dived into two parts, since users who haven't got the software at hand need to follow different steps.
- Insert the medium (floppy/cd/dvd/usb) with the firewallsoftware
- If the windows autoplay function doesn't kick in goto step 3, else goto step 5
- Goto start->run->browse
- Browse to the medium and search for a file named setup.exe install.exe etc.->ok->ok
- Follow the instructions in the setup wizard
- Reboot after installation has finished
- At sometime during installation you'll be asked if you want to turn off the windows firewall, you can do this, since you're allready protected now. If you're not asked wheter you want to turn it off, you can do it manually, after rebooting. Goto start->control panel->security center. There you can turn off the windows firewall
- Goto the next page of this tutorial, the steps below are for people who haven't got firewallsoftware at hand
Note: Do NOT connect your computer to the internet if you've followed the above steps
- Goto one of the sites mentioned in the firewall section of this site and download a firewall (do NOT choose open from location, but choose save as, save the file to a easily accesible location like the desktop)
- Doubleclick the downloaded file and follow the setup instructions
- After finishing setup restart the computer
- Immediatly update the firewall
