Ad-Aware installation and configuration
Note: This tutorial applies to Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 but can be applied to other versions
After downloading/purchasing Ad-Aware you need to setup the program
- Execute 'aawsepersonal.exe'
- Press 'next' and the license agreement will appear. Read it carefully and check the box next to 'I accept the license agreement' when you agree. When you don't cancel the installation
- Now choose where to install ad-aware. Press 'next' if you don't want to install the program to another location, press browse when you want to change the folder ad-aware is installed to. (click to enlarge the image)
- Press next once again when asked which users should have access to the program 'next' once again to start installing.
- At the post-installation screen, uncheck 'open the help file now' and press finish
- The program will update it's definition files
- And perform a full systems cana fterwards, this will take a few minutes, so sit back and relax
- During scanning your virusscanner may show a warning similar to this one
- Don't worry, the file found isn't really a virus, it's a java exploit. If you keep your computer up- to-date, there's nothing to worry about.
- Now the scanning results will be presented check all items and press 'next'
- Now to do some configuration work. Click on the little 'wheel' icon next to the magnifying glass.
- Goto 'scanning' and check 'scan within archives'. Now goto 'advanced' and check 'include environment information.
- At the 'startup' tab you can configure aaw to startup with windows and immediatly perform a systems can. This is recommended if you really don't know what you're doing on the web. When you run aaw every week, you don't need to let the program start when starting windows.
- At the 'defaults' tab you can specify your default homepage and searchsite. When a browserhijacker changes these in your browser, aaw will repair them using these settings.
- To finish goto tweak and expand 'cleaning engine'. Check 'automatically check all objects in result list' this will save you a lot of clicking
- Now click 'proceed' and you're done.
- When you want to perform a scan in the future, start the program and press 'check for update now'. After the update is finished press 'start'. Select 'perform smart system scan' and press next.
